England's Henderson injures wrist in World Cup celebration

England midfielder Jordan Henderson sustained a serious wrist injury while celebrating with teammates after a World Cup victory over Mexico. His status is now in question for a quarterfinal meeting with Norway.

Henderson fell over an advertising board as the Three Lions celebrated behind a goal Sunday at Mexico City Stadium. He did not play in the chaotic 3-2 triumph, which sealed England's placement in the quarterfinal. Fellow midfielder Jude Bellingham sparked the victory with two scores in the first half. Harry Kane added a 60th-minute penalty kick but also triggered a Mexico penalty kick in the 69th minute, which tightened the score.

"He injured his wrist," England manager Thomas Tuchel told reporters. "He is at the moment at the hospital, so it's a quite serious injury. It just doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don't know the procedure or what's going on."

Henderson totaled 119 minutes of action during the Three Lions' World Cup run. Social media footage showed the midfielder attempting to clear a board behind a teammate. He placed his hands on the board and cleared it with his right foot but clipped the other side as he attempted a hurdle. He then fell directly on his left wrist. Several teammates called for medical personnel to help Henderson, who was stretchered off and taken to a hospital.
