Eala stuns Osaka, reaches Washington final vs. Pegula

Pegula beat Eala in their only prior meeting, a 2025 Miami semifinal. "It's going to be a battle," Pegula said. "Alex, I'm a big fan of her. She's the future of the tour and she's already here."

Eala took the first set in 38 minutes, breaking Osaka's serve at 4-3 after Osaka saved three break points in the ninth game only to surrender the break with two errant forehands. Eala closed the set on a service winner.

Osaka double-faulted to give up a break at the start of the second set and netted a backhand to hand Eala a 5-2 edge. Eala, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last month, held serve to close the match after 76 minutes.

Pegula, a semifinalist at this year's Australian Open, has won titles at Dubai and Charleston this season. She won the last five games of the opening set against Shnaider, then broke in the fifth and seventh games of the second. Shnaider broke back in the eighth, but Pegula served out the match in the 10th game, smashing a forehand winner for her WTA-best 38th match win of the year.

In the men's semifinals, world number 10 Taylor Fritz faces 33rd-ranked Brandon Nakashima in an all-American matchup. Chile's Alejandro Tabilo meets 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar, who will crack the top 20 in next week's rankings.
