Alex Eala and Nikola Bartunkova face Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin on July 2 at Wimbledon. The Filipino-Czech pair looks to upset a higher-ranked team with limited doubles history.
Alex Eala and Nikola Bartunkova will open their Wimbledon doubles campaign against Jelena Ostapenko and Sofia Kenin on July 2 at the All England Club.
The draw released Friday pits the Filipino-Czech partnership against a duo with 16 combined doubles titles. Ostapenko is ranked 10th in doubles with 12 career wins. Kenin, a former Australian Open singles champion, holds four doubles titles and sits 37th. Eala is 151st. Bartunkova is 1799th.
Eala and Bartunkova first played together at the Birmingham Open in June, losing to British wild cards Harriet Dart and Maia Lumsden in a tight three-setter, 4-6, 6-2, 9-11. Days later, the two met in the Birmingham singles final. Eala won 5-7, 6-3, 7-5. They now return as a doubles team for the grass-court major.
Ostapenko and Kenin have limited doubles history. They partnered at the Eastbourne Open last week, reached the quarterfinals, and withdrew because of Kenin's injury. The status of that injury by July 2 is unknown.
Eala has faced Ostapenko in doubles before. At Indian Wells in March, Eala and Iva Jovic lost 2-6, 2-6 to Ostapenko and Hailey Baptiste. In singles, Eala holds a 2-1 head-to-head edge over Ostapenko, though those matches came at Challenger level.
On grass, power and serve-and-volley execution often decide early rounds. Ostapenko's flat groundstrokes and strong return game are a clear strength. Kenin's baseline consistency can extend rallies off the ground. Eala relies on movement, shot craft, and court sense. Bartunkova provides lefty variety and a solid serve.
The experience gap is wide. Eala and Bartunkova are 21 and 20, with fewer high-level doubles reps. Ostapenko and Kenin have the rankings and the hardware. They also have less than a week of playing together as a pair.
That lack of match rhythm, combined with Kenin's recent injury, creates an opening for Eala and Bartunkova. Holding serve early and putting Kenin in motion could test her movement. Losing the first set quickly would make the upset harder.
The match is set for July 2. Eala will also play an exhibition mixed doubles match with Joao Fonseca against Iva Jovic and Learner Tien at the US Open on August 27.
