Deutsche Bahn halts all trains after radio system failure

Germany's national railway operator halted all trains nationwide Tuesday evening, citing a failure in its digital radio communication system. Deutsche Bahn said trains were being held at stations because of the problem, which affects the railway's core signaling and coordination network. There was no immediate word on the cause or how long the disruption would last.

The system in question is GSM-R, the railway-specific radio standard that carries voice and data between train drivers and control centers. Without it, dispatchers cannot issue movement authorities, and trains cannot safely proceed past signals. A nationwide halt is the required safety protocol when the backbone fails, Deutsche Bahn's communications office said in a brief statement to German news agency dpa.

The shutdown idles roughly 5.7 billion passenger-kilometers of Deutsche Bahn's annual long-distance service and a large share of Germany's freight rail volume, which moves about 270 million tons of goods each year. While the operator did not release an estimated down time, similar technical failures in recent years – such as a 2018 GSM-R outage on a key corridor – have taken hours to resolve once backup systems were activated.

For freight forwarders and logistics companies reliant on rail, the timing is particularly disruptive. Germany's industrial supply chains lean heavily on just-in-time delivery, and a multi-hour halt can cascade into missed connection windows at inland ports and distribution hubs. Passenger travelers face cancellations and delays across the country's main routes.

The next concrete marker for the market is the restoration of the radio network. Deutsche Bahn gave no estimate for when normal operations would resume. The operator said it was working to restore service but offered no timeline.
