Death Threat to Modi Before Australia Visit Triggers AFP Probe

Australian police are investigating a death threat posted on Facebook targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his July 9 visit to Melbourne, according to The Australia Today.

The comment appeared beneath a Facebook post promoting the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event at Marvel Stadium. The account, using the name "ابو مصطفى" (Abu Mustafa), wrote: "the roof tops of the stadium better close during the event or he will be coming to Australia for his death."

The Australian Federal Police said no arrests had been made but confirmed investigators had identified the IP address associated with the post, the report said. Authorities are assessing whether the message constitutes a criminal offence.

Modi's visit includes bilateral engagements and the Melbourne community gathering. Security planning for high-profile visits involves multiple agencies, including the AFP and state police.

The threat comes less than two weeks before the event. A quick resolution – an arrest or a statement downgrading the risk – would allow the visit to proceed as planned. The absence of such action closer to the date could force adjustments to the itinerary.

For investors tracking Indian exposure, the key signal is whether the Melbourne event proceeds without disruption. Any cancellation or venue change would be noted, though a single online threat rarely moves markets on its own. The Indian foreign ministry has not commented on the report.
