WTI crude holds near $88 resistance, Brent near $94, as traders await Middle East headlines over the weekend. The 50-day EMA provides support near $86.50 for WTI and $92 for Brent. A ceasefire or escalation could break the neutral setup.
Crude oil futures held above their 50-day moving averages on Friday. WTI traded near $88 a barrel, Brent near $94. Traders are unwilling to take large positions before the weekend, FXEmpire analyst Chris wrote in a note.
The market is moving on headlines, he said. Peace hopes push prices lower. Supply fears lift them. Each time Middle East talks appear to progress, a new headline revives supply concerns. That pattern shows no sign of breaking, Chris added.
Technical levels offer a framework. WTI's 50-day EMA sits near $86.50, providing a floor for the recent rally. The $88 level is resistance, with the $92 swing high above that. For Brent, the 50-day EMA is around $92. A gap from the July 27 open near $93.80 remains unfilled. The resolution of that gap depends on weekend headlines, Chris said.
The near-term setup is neutral, he said. That could change. A ceasefire breakthrough would likely push prices below the 50-day EMA. An escalation would target the $92 resistance in WTI and the gap fill in Brent. Traders are watching for any news from the region, he wrote.
Weekend headlines introduce two days of potential risk. Positions are light, the analyst said.
