Survey: 46% of Indian consumers planning a smartphone purchase within six months will stretch their budget. Price sensitivity peaks among 25-30-year-olds in Tier-I cities.
Indian consumers are ready to spend more on their next smartphone even as prices climb, according to a Counterpoint Research survey published Friday.
Forty-six percent of respondents planning a purchase within the next six months said they would stretch their budgets to get the model they wanted. The willingness to pay up peaks among 25-to-30-year-olds (52 percent) and is slightly higher in Tier-I cities, Counterpoint said. The group includes consumers who would switch ecosystems or take on financing to complete the purchase.
Another 29 percent of the roughly 2,100 respondents plan to buy within their original budget or choose a refurbished device, a pattern most common among buyers over 50, the report said.
The remaining 25 percent said they would delay the purchase if their preferred model got pricier. Those consumers intend to keep their current device longer or get it repaired to extend its life, Counterpoint found. The delay behavior is more prevalent among students and homemakers.
The price sensitivity matters because smartphone costs have been rising as manufacturing and component expenses climb. Counterpoint said in June that memory prices helped drive India's biggest June-quarter smartphone shipment decline in six years.
