Peabody Energy (BTU) faces an Aug. 24 deadline for investors to seek lead plaintiff status in a securities class action filed over disclosures about its Centurion mine in Illinois. The lawsuit, brought by Faruqi & Faruqi on behalf of shareholders, alleges the company and its executives made false or misleading statements about the mine's ramp-up between October 2024 and May 2026.
The complaint claims Peabody knew about problems delaying longwall production at Centurion but withheld that information while providing positive updates. The mine is the company's flagship metallurgical coal project, designed to supply the seaborne steelmaking market. Delays there have weighed heavily on the stock.
Two guidance cuts triggered sharp drops. On March 30, Peabody said Centurion would deliver only about 250,000 tons in the first quarter, far short of an earlier estimate of 700,000 tons, citing "greater-than-anticipated mine commissioning challenges." Shares fell 9.7 percent to $35.68. On May 5, the company cut its full-year Centurion sales outlook to 2.5 million tons from 3.5 million tons and acknowledged it had missed the March 2026 deadline to reach full production. BTU dropped another 5.7 percent to $25.
The stock has since lost about half its value from the pre-disclosure level. The lawsuit alleges that the inflation in the share price began to correct with the first disclosure and continued after the second.
The class covers investors who purchased BTU between Oct. 14, 2024 and May 4, 2026. The lead plaintiff, typically the investor with the largest financial interest, will direct the litigation and choose counsel. The Aug. 24 deadline applies to motions seeking that role. Shareholders who do not seek lead plaintiff status can still share in any recovery, the firm said.
"If you purchased or acquired securities in Peabody Energy between October 14, 2024 and May 4, 2026 and would like to discuss your legal rights, call Faruqi & Faruqi partner Josh Wilson directly," the firm said in a statement.
Peabody has not publicly responded to the lawsuit's allegations. The court will appoint a lead plaintiff after the deadline. No trial date has been scheduled.
