Hamza Mostafa spent three months last year as an intern at OpenAI. He is 21, based in San Francisco, and works on his own AI projects now. He shared three pieces of advice for people trying to break into the field.
Mostafa said the first step is to build a broad understanding of AI and machine learning. The field is wide, so he suggested starting with general concepts before picking a specialization. He used YouTube and, later, tools like ChatGPT and Claude to learn the basics.
Once you have a direction, he said, dive deep and start building projects. Projects expose gaps in understanding and give you something concrete to show employers. "The best way I learn is by doing and by building," Mostafa said.
