Binance Pay has connected with DK Bank's domestic QR network, letting travelers and local customers pay with crypto at more than 3,700 businesses across Bhutan. Transactions settle in USDT through automatic foreign exchange conversion, with the buyer entering the amount in Bhutanese ngultrum (BTN) before the app handles the rest.
Binance announced the integration Aug. 17. The rollout follows an initial tourism payment pilot that started with over 100 merchants in May 2025. SB Seker, head of Asia-Pacific at Binance, described the integration as a model for other tourism-driven markets.
"Integrating Binance Pay with Bhutan's domestic QR network shows what real-world crypto adoption looks like when it's built on infrastructure people already trust," Seker said.
The Bhutan connection extends Binance's broader push into local QR networks. That program had processed $40 million in its first year, and the company said in May it planned to bring the model to at least 10 countries by the third quarter of 2026. The idea is to link crypto balances with payment rails merchants already use, rather than deploying separate hardware.
Customers complete purchases by opening the Binance app, scanning the merchant's existing DK Bank QR code, entering the amount in BTN, and confirming the transaction. The conversion and settlement in Tether's USDT stablecoin happen behind the scenes. The USDT peg targets the U.S. dollar, which gives a consistent settlement base after buyers enter local-currency prices. The announcement did not name the conversion rate provider or detail how spreads would be calculated.
Binance has run a similar setup in Argentina since October 2025, where users scan merchant codes through the app and conversion happens automatically. Bhutan's approach follows the same playbook: connect crypto wallets to the payment infrastructure already in place, rather than asking merchants to learn new systems.
Bhutan has also tied DK Bank to broader digital finance plans through Gelephu Mindfulness City, a special administrative region where a financial services licensing framework includes bank-account requirements. The QR integration brings that strategy into everyday tourism and retail payments.
Ugyen Tenzin, DK Bank's country CEO for Bhutan and Gelephu Mindfulness City, said the partnership preserves infrastructure merchants already rely on.
"We are proud to partner with Binance to bring cutting-edge crypto payment solutions to Bhutan's merchants and visitors," Tenzin said. "Integrating Binance Pay with our domestic QR network allows us to enhance the payment experience while maintaining the trusted payment infrastructure already in place."
Eligible transactions include travel, lodging, dining, and retail wherever a DK Bank Domestic QR code is accepted. Binance said customers will pay no additional fees and receive a competitive exchange rate under a promotional offer scheduled to run through Dec. 31.
The Royal Government of Bhutan has also been active in crypto markets. It shifted another 738 bitcoin worth roughly $44.88 million on June 6, continuing a pattern of transfers that began months earlier. The country's bitcoin holdings, accumulated through its hydropower-driven mining operations, have drawn attention as one of the few sovereign digital asset treasuries.
