Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday asked Mitch McConnell’s office for a health update, ratcheting up public pressure on the 84-year-old senator who has been hospitalized for more than three weeks.
McConnell was admitted to a hospital on June 14. His office has released few details about his condition or why he was admitted.
Beshear, a Democrat, said in a statement that Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned. He requested that McConnell provide an update “in a transparent manner, direct from the source.” The governor added that continued speculation “is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians.”
McConnell’s office did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. The office also declined to provide an update when CNBC asked Tuesday, instead pointing to a brief statement issued last week.
That statement said the senator “appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital.” It described him as improving and working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the chamber is out of session.
The former longtime Senate majority leader said earlier this year he would not seek an eighth term, following a series of health scares. His June 14 hospitalization triggered fresh questions about his health and his ability to serve out the remainder of his current term.
Beshear’s request is the highest-profile public challenge to the information vacuum so far. A governor from the other party asking for a health update puts McConnell’s office in a difficult position. Any response – or continued silence – now carries political weight.
The Senate is out of session, which removes the immediate pressure of a floor vote or a public appearance. The office’s statement described McConnell as “working closely with his staff” but offered no timeline for his return to Washington or a more detailed public statement.
Without that update, speculation fills the gap. Beshear’s statement raises the bar for what counts as an adequate response. A physician’s report, a statement from McConnell himself, or a substantive update from his office would answer the questions. Until one arrives, the default expectation is that the silence continues.
McConnell’s office did not respond to CNBC’s request for an update Tuesday. It did not respond to Beshear’s request Wednesday.
