Barhale Fits Anglian Water Plant to Strip Pesticide from River

Barhale has completed a £7.8M upgrade at Anglian Water's Raunds Water Recycling Centre near Wellingborough, adding a cloth filter and ferric dosing system designed to remove the pesticide Cypermethrin from treated effluent. The pesticide, used legally in agriculture and domestic products, is detected in trace amounts in watercourses and can harm aquatic invertebrates.

The project also upgraded the site's ammonia treatment to meet a new 1.5mg/l consent. Barhale installed 12 modular nitrifying SAF units, blowers, and a motor control cabinet. The work was done through Anglian Water's @one Alliance in collaboration with the water company and the Environment Agency.

Cypermethrin is a pyrethroid insecticide. The new filter system uses a purpose-designed cloth filter with ferric dosing, a 30m³ storage tank, and downstream pumps. Barhale also built structural bases, pipework, and maintenance access routes. The project is part of Anglian Water's broader investment in tertiary treatment to meet tighter environmental standards.
