Axel REE's Woolrich ISR tests exceeded the Gerik benchmark with 560ppm TREO and 39% MREO; December field program aims to validate operating parameters for first-mover status in Minas Gerais.
Axel REE (ASX: AXL) said its metallurgical test work at the Woolrich rare earths deposit in Brazil returned soluble total rare earth oxides of 560 parts per million and magnet rare earth oxides of 39% under in-situ recovery (ISR) analogue conditions. The results, delivered by Core Resources in Brisbane, used a mild magnesium sulphate solution under dynamic flow conditions.
The soluble TREO grade exceeds the 486ppm benchmark Axel previously reported from the Gerik ISR operation in Malaysia. The company said impurity mobilisation – aluminium, iron, thorium and uranium – remained low, supporting the deposit's suitability for ISR development.
Axel plans to start a field exploratory test program at Woolrich in the December quarter. The program will assess permeability, reagent consumption, pregnant leach solution tenor, recovery behaviour, hydraulic control and impurity management under field conditions. A small land parcel with low-relief topography has been selected to support gravity-assisted drainage, with bedrock beneath the ionic clay mineralisation expected to act as a natural hydraulic boundary.
During the quarter, Axel reported assays from 137 holes of a 258-hole infill and step-out auger drilling campaign at Woolrich. The 200-metre by 200-metre drill spacing is designed to support conversion of the current inferred mineral resource of 128 million tonnes grading 1,013ppm TREO to the Indicated category. Best intercepts included 1 metre at 8,517ppm TREO with 41% MREO and 269ppm dysprosium-terbium, and thick shallow zones such as 6 metres at 3,324ppm TREO from 1 metre depth.
Dr Patience Mpofu was appointed managing director in June. She holds a doctorate in mineral processing and has technical expertise in clay-hosted mineral systems and rare earth metallurgy, directly relevant to the planned ISR field program. She is also a non-executive director of Orion Minerals and founder of Insight Mining Experts.
Axel finished the quarter with $5.7 million in cash. Success through the field program could position the company as a first-mover in commercial ISR rare earths extraction in Minas Gerais state.
