Australian Vanadium has put a 500 megawatt-hour vanadium flow battery into the WA government's hands. The ASX-listed miner and its unit VSUN Energy submitted a Stage Two proposal for the Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System, targeting 2029 for commercial operation.
The consortium-led project would build, own and run the battery in the Eastern Goldfields. The design backs energy security and renewable integration while hitting the state's local-content requirement. Selection, financing, approvals, procurement and construction all sit between the proposal and a final go-ahead.
CEO Graham Arvidson called the submission an important milestone. "The Kalgoorlie VBESS has the potential to deliver benefits extending well beyond the battery itself," he said. "By connecting WA vanadium resources, local electrolyte manufacturing, project construction, and long-term energy storage operations, the project has the potential to establish the foundation for a broader sovereign vanadium and long-duration energy storage industry in the state."
The Stage Two bid follows an earlier Expression of Interest round. Australian Vanadium has done technical and commercial work with consortium partners, advisers and prospective funders. The delivery model blends the group's WA vanadium capability with global battery technology, engineering, construction and asset management, plus a regional industrial supply chain.
Submission does not guarantee preferred status. Further negotiations and definitive agreements must follow before the project proceeds.
VSUN Energy, founded in 2016, develops the Australian market for vanadium flow battery systems. It sits inside the group's vertical integration strategy spanning high-purity vanadium processing, electrolyte manufacturing and renewable energy project development. The Gabanintha vanadium project holds 395.4 million tonnes at 0.77% vanadium pentoxide, including a high-grade zone of 173.2 million tonnes at 1.09% vanadium pentoxide.
The proposal pairs that upstream resource with a utility-scale storage asset, creating a local demand pathway for vanadium electrolyte while extending the group's exposure across the vanadium value chain. The WA government will evaluate the bid alongside other Stage Two participants under the EOI guidelines before picking a preferred proponent.
