Ottawa-based Assent buys German software firm IPoint, merging supply chain and material intelligence to tackle EU regulations and North American auto sector.
Assent, the Ottawa-based centaur, has completed its first acquisition. It bought IPoint, a German sustainability software provider, to expand its compliance offerings. The deal was announced Thursday morning.
Both companies help manufacturers and distributors track how their products are made for regulatory purposes. Assent focuses on supply chain transparency. IPoint specializes in material intelligence – the data on what materials go into a product and their environmental impact. IPoint will bring its material compliance and environmental assessment tools to Assent's platform, while Assent contributes its supplier network and regulatory expertise. Customers from both firms will see their platforms merged, Assent said.
“Our customers need to understand their products at every level, from what goes into them across their supply chains to their full environmental impact across their lifecycle,” CEO Michael Southworth said in a statement. “Until now, getting that complete picture required piecing together data from multiple systems.”
Last year, Assent appointed Southworth as CEO to lead growth toward a $250 million revenue target. At the time, the company said the leadership change positioned it to accelerate global expansion and pursue strategic acquisitions like this one.
Assent and IPoint both aid compliance with materials and supply chain regulations worldwide. Assent is pushing harder into the European Union, which has added new rules for manufacturers, including the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and the upcoming Battery Passport requirement.
By combining the two companies, Assent said it improves its ability to serve Europe while giving North American automotive manufacturers and distributors access to IPoint's sector knowledge. The single most valuable asset, according to Assent, is the combined data network. The company argues it will let customers use AI to get answers about products and their components more easily.
