The Indian Air Force launched an air support mission Wednesday to airlift State Disaster Response Force personnel and relief materials from Itanagar to Pitapool in Keyi Panyor district, after flash floods triggered by torrential rain hit the Poosa area. The operation, coordinated through the Eastern Air Command in Shillong, moved rescue teams and equipment despite challenging weather, officials said.
The state's Department of Civil Aviation was activated immediately after the flooding was reported. Acting on a requisition from the district's deputy commissioner, the department sought air support from the Eastern Air Command. Colonel R. Malhotra of the Ministry of Defence and Group Captain Mukesh Chauhan of the Eastern Air Command guided the mission, which reached Hollongi before proceeding to Pitapool.
Five people were initially reported missing. Later Wednesday, the body of Nirmala Gupta (35), a teacher at VKV NEEPCO, was recovered. The remaining missing are Elesh Marak (13), Balari Marak (30), Tao Anjina (46), and Sourav Kumar. Around 18 houses and residential quarters in the NEEPCO colony at Poosa sustained damage, though detailed assessments are still underway, the Department of Information and Public Relations said.
Road restoration is progressing on multiple fronts. Two excavators are clearing blockages from the Pitapool side toward Potin. Trailer trucks have been arranged from Kra Daadi and Kamle districts. The Border Roads Organisation is clearing roads from the Kimin side, while Highway Department teams work from Hoj. Several stretches between Potin, Pitapool and Poosa remain affected by landslides and debris, though partial connectivity has been restored for emergency vehicles.
NEEPCO has begun releasing water from the reservoir of the Panyor Lower Hydropower Project as a precaution. Power generation at the project has been temporarily suspended, the secretary said. Heavy rainfall also blocked three stretches of NH-13 near Potin and Hoj, leaving several people stranded.
Six districts – Keyi Panyor, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri, Kamle and Upper Subansiri – have been cut off due to monsoon-related disruptions, SP Angad Mehta said. Additional air support operations are planned as rescue and relief activities continue.
The Department of Civil Aviation and the Department of Disaster Management thanked the IAF, SDRF personnel and APD Hollongi for the swift deployment.
