ANZ's new CIO rolled out a nine-priority tech roadmap aligned with the bank's 2030 strategy. The big unknown is whether the bank can execute the modernization without blowing up costs or operations.
ANZ Banking Group's new chief information officer, Donald Patra, marked his first six months in the role with a nine-point technology roadmap. The plan, laid out in a video and article on the bank's Bluenotes publication, is designed to support the broader ANZ 2030 strategy.
Patra spent those months observing the bank's technology operations, customer pain points, and internal culture. "The reason that you need to understand 'the lay of the land' is because that will determine your ambitions," he said. The roadmap covers a simplified architecture, data and AI enablement, delivery and engineering excellence, a non-financial risk and controls uplift, and cyber maturity. Patra also stressed the need for a unified workforce mindset and a performance culture.
The shift comes as banks across the industry race to modernize aging legacy systems while keeping costs in check. ANZ's 2030 strategy depends on technology that can handle faster payments, better data analytics, and tighter security. Patra acknowledged the link: "The [ANZ] 2030 strategy is one aspect. The technology strategy that we build on top of the 2030 strategy is starting to come out and people see that line of sight."
For investors, the question is whether the roadmap can be executed without blowing out spending or disrupting day-to-day operations. Banks have a long track record of big IT projects that ran over budget or failed to hit deadlines. ANZ's focus on resilience and risk control suggests the bank is also preparing for tighter regulatory demands. Competitors such as Commonwealth Bank and Westpac are pursuing similar transformations, making the delivery timeline a key competitive factor.
Patra said he now has the clarity to provide direction to the organisation. The nine priorities are a statement of intent. The real test will be how many of them move from slides to systems within the next two years.
