Ann Taylor's 'This Is Ann' campaign, its first major push since 2017, aims to reconnect with shoppers after parent Ascension's bankruptcy. Includes Substack and NYFW activation.
Ann Taylor, the 70-year-old women's apparel chain, is betting its survival on a marketing reboot. The KnitWell Group-owned retailer on Tuesday launched "This Is Ann," its first integrated campaign since 2017, after years of declining sales and the bankruptcy of its former parent company, Ascension Retail Group.
The campaign, developed in-house, follows women juggling careers and family responsibilities. Ads shot around New York's Upper West Side and Central Park show off a fall collection of sharply cut blazers and tailored separates. Photographer Dan Martensen and videographer Garrett Hardy Davis handled the visuals.
"This Is Ann marks a new chapter for Ann Taylor, celebrating the woman at the center of our brand – confident, stylish and moving seamlessly through every part of her busy life," Ann Taylor Executive Vice President and Chief Merchandising Officer Heather Gruccio said in a statement. "The campaign and our fall collection is a reflection of what the brand is today, a brand for the modern woman and her multidimensional life."
The push is part of Ann Taylor's effort to reconnect with existing customers while reaching a new audience of career-minded shoppers. The last time the retailer ran a campaign of this scale was 2017, a spokesperson said.
Beyond the seasonal ads, Ann Taylor is expanding its community-building efforts. In February it launched a Substack newsletter called The Desk, which publishes career and style advice. The retailer is also extending its Style 101 digital video series, where fashion experts offer wardrobe advice. Other heritage brands have used newsletters to drive engagement outside crowded social media and to stand out against AI chatbots that scrape forums and editorial sites for answers.
Ann Taylor will have a presence at New York Fashion Week, running an experiential activation in the SoHo neighborhood. The space will feature campaign imagery, a street cart, and a newsstand stocked with "This Is Ann" editorial materials, including magalogs and custom-wrapped issues of fashion publication Daily Front Row.
Looking further ahead, Ann Taylor plans to roll out a brand ambassador program in early 2027 that spotlights "authentic voices of the women who love and wear the brand," the press release said. The program will focus on social media.
Ann Taylor needs the campaign to work. The retailer's sales had been plunging before its former parent Ascension Retail Group filed for bankruptcy in 2020. Competitors like Coach have won over Gen Z shoppers with a creator-heavy strategy. Ann Taylor's ambassador program and Substack push are meant to build a similar community.
The next concrete milestone is the NYFW activation later this month. The ambassador program is set for early 2027.
