Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu announced gold exploration in Kuppam using modern tech, part of a plan to turn the region into an industrial hub. The move targets domestic gold production.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said Saturday the state will explore and develop potential gold deposits in Kuppam using modern technology, following the model of the Jonnagiri Gold Project. The announcement came at a public meeting in Kuppam, where Naidu outlined a vision to transform the constituency into 'Swarna Kuppam' – an industrial and employment hub.
Geological surveys have indicated gold-bearing formations in the area, the Chief Minister said. The state plans to use advanced exploration and mining technologies to develop the resource. Kuppam already produces blue granite with strong international demand. Naidu also announced a Heritage Granite Cluster to boost value addition and exports from the region.
The broader industrial push includes attracting manufacturing and mineral-based investments to the constituency, according to a state government release. Naidu said the gold exploration would generate employment and reduce the need for local youth to migrate for jobs.
India imports the bulk of its gold, with domestic mines contributing a small fraction of annual consumption. The Jonnagiri mine in Andhra Pradesh is one of the few operating gold mines in the country. A new discovery in Kuppam could, over time, add to domestic supply, though exploration remains at an early stage. The next step will be detailed feasibility studies. No timeline has been set for mining operations.
