WalletHub's 2026 study ranks Virginia as the most patriotic state, with high military presence and voter turnout. Montana and Vermont follow. The metrics go beyond flag-waving.
Virginia ranked as the most patriotic state in the country for 2026, according to a WalletHub study that measured military and civic engagement across all 50 states.
The report used 13 metrics split into two categories: military engagement and civic engagement. Those included active-duty military personnel, veterans, voter turnout, volunteerism, jury service, and participation in national service programs like Peace Corps and AmeriCorps.
Virginia earned the top spot because of its strong military presence and high civic participation. The state has roughly 1,761 active-duty service members per 100,000 civilians, the third-highest ratio in the nation. It also has about 103 veterans per 1,000 civilians, second only to one other state. On the civic side, 72.9% of eligible voters in Virginia cast a ballot in the 2024 presidential election, well above the national average of 66%. The study also pointed to Virginia's requirement that high school students take a standalone civics class. The state ranks fifth in Peace Corps volunteers per capita.
Montana finished second. The study said 69.2% of Montana's voting-age population turned out for the 2024 presidential election, and nearly 46% voted in the 2020 primary election, the highest primary turnout in the country. Montana also ranks second nationwide for jury service and for AmeriCorps volunteers per capita. More than 37% of Montana residents volunteer for community organizations. The state has about 101 veterans per 1,000 civilians, the fifth-highest rate in the U.S.
Vermont took third place. The report highlighted Vermont's exceptional record in volunteerism and public service. It has the highest number of Peace Corps volunteers per capita and the highest number of AmeriCorps volunteers per capita. Vermont also recorded the second-highest overall volunteer rate among all states, plus the highest per capita jury service rate and the eighth-highest share of military reservists.
WalletHub scored each state on a 100-point scale across the 13 indicators, then combined the weighted scores. States with high military engagement often see more stable federal contracting and housing demand. High civic participation can signal a more engaged workforce and stronger local tax bases. For investors watching state-level economic trends, the ranking offers a rough proxy for community resilience and federal spending exposure.
