Amazon Now rapid grocery delivery expands to Manchester, the first city outside London, promising 30-minute delivery from micro fulfilment centres. Tesco also announced Uber Eats and Deliveroo partnerships.
Amazon's rapid grocery delivery service has landed in Manchester, the first city outside London to get the offering after the capital launch earlier this year.
Amazon Now promises thousands of groceries and household essentials in about 30 minutes or less. The service uses a network of micro fulfilment centres positioned near residential and inner-city areas. Sites are already live in Southwark, Bethnal Green, Battersea, Lewisham, Hampstead, Notting Hill, Haringey, Walthamstow and Wembley, alongside East Manchester. Salford and Stockport locations will follow in the coming weeks, the company said.
"Amazon Now brings a new level of speed and convenience to customers, delivering thousands of groceries and household essentials in less than 30 minutes," John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager at Amazon, said in a statement. "It's the latest example of our commitment to faster delivery, building on the millions of items we already deliver the same or next day to customers across the UK."
Customers in eligible Manchester postcodes can shop everyday essentials including milk, eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables, toothpaste, pet treats, nappies and medicines, alongside local brands like Kellogg's, PG Tips and Warburtons.
The Manchester expansion comes as Tesco this week announced plans to launch on Uber Eats and Deliveroo. Tesco's Whoosh service already offers store-to-door grocery delivery from as little as 20 minutes from around 1,800 stores, reaching more than 70% of the UK population. Whoosh launched in 2021 and about 1.5 million customers now use it, the company said.
The Uber Eats tie-up will launch in August, and the Deliveroo partnership will roll out later this summer. Customers will be able to access hundreds of Clubcard Prices and collect Clubcard points when shopping Tesco through these platforms, according to the company.
"Whoosh has transformed the way millions of customers shop with Tesco, offering speed, convenience and great value through the power of Clubcard," Ashwin Prasad, Tesco UK CEO, said in a statement. "Launching with Uber Eats and Deliveroo will enable us to bring those benefits to even more customers."
