Amazon Expands AmazonNow Quick Commerce as Fresh Operations Close in Major Cities

Amazon is scaling back its Fresh grocery service in major Indian cities to accelerate the expansion of its AmazonNow quick commerce network, which now operates 450 dark stores.

Amazon is pivoting its grocery strategy in India, scaling back its Amazon Fresh service in key metropolitan areas while aggressively expanding its quick commerce offering, AmazonNow. The retail giant is shuttering Amazon Fresh operations in several top-tier cities as it shifts focus toward the rapid delivery model.

AmazonNow is currently operational in six major hubs: Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Pune. To support this growth, the company is rapidly increasing its infrastructure, adding approximately two new dark stores per day. This expansion drive has brought the total number of dark stores utilized for the quick commerce service to roughly 450. The move signals a strategic transition for the e-commerce leader as it prioritizes faster fulfillment speeds to compete in the increasingly crowded instant-delivery market.
