That put the Chinese technology giant ahead of Google and Meta, Bloomberg reported Saturday, citing data from open-source AI hub Hugging Face. The company's Qwen family of models also beat domestic rivals like DeepSeek.
The Qwen line includes more than 460 open-sourced models, Alibaba told Bloomberg in a statement. Its ecosystem has produced over 300,000 derivative models. By comparison, Google recorded 418 million downloads in the same period and Meta logged 227 million, Hugging Face data showed.
Open-weight models can be freely used to build new AI products, making download counts a rough proxy for developer adoption. Alibaba's Qwen now ranks as "one of the largest foundations of the open AI ecosystem," the Hugging Face report said. The model family has become "the default workflow for developers deciding what models to fine-tune and deploy."
American technology companies have responded. Meta and Nvidia both released new open models in recent days, Bloomberg noted.
