Alcon and RxSight entered a partnership to develop light-adjustable intraocular lenses for presbyopia correction. The deal includes $60 million upfront and additional milestone payments, the companies said.
The lenses use RxSight's Light Adjustable Lens technology, which allows surgeons to adjust the lens power after implantation using a light delivery device. The technology is already approved for correcting astigmatism and spherical errors. The new collaboration targets presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision that affects most cataract patients.
Alcon is one of the largest players in the intraocular lens market. RxSight's adjustable lens platform gives it a differentiated product in a space where fixed-power lenses dominate. The partnership combines RxSight's proprietary technology with Alcon's manufacturing and commercial reach.
Presbyopia-correcting IOLs are a fast-growing segment of the cataract surgery market. Surgeons and patients have shown interest in adjustable lenses that can fine-tune vision after surgery, reducing the need for glasses or additional procedures. The global cataract surgery market runs to millions of procedures each year, and premium IOLs represent a higher-revenue opportunity for manufacturers.
Financial terms beyond the $60 million upfront were not disclosed. The companies said the collaboration covers development, regulatory work, and eventual commercialization.
The deal positions both companies to compete with other adjustable IOL technologies in development. RxSight gets capital and a larger partner's distribution network. Alcon gains access to a technology that could strengthen its premium IOL portfolio.
