Aditya Birla Group proposes ₹12,000 crore additional investment for Odisha alumina refinery expansion, taking total to ₹20,000 crore. Hindalco to triple capacity to 3 MTPA.
The Aditya Birla Group proposed an additional ₹12,000 crore investment Saturday to expand its greenfield alumina refinery project at Kansariguda in Odisha's Rayagada district, an official statement said.
Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla made the announcement after meeting Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Bhubaneswar. The group already operates a refinery and two smelter plants in the state.
Hindalco Industries, the group's metals flagship, is implementing the 1 MTPA capacity greenfield refinery at Kansariguda with an initial outlay of ₹8,000 crore. The new proposal would triple capacity to 3 MTPA, raising total investment to ₹20,000 crore.
The meeting reviewed progress on the group's existing and proposed projects across Odisha, including aluminium, alumina, chemicals, cement, renewable energy, textiles and apparel. Discussions also covered possible forays into copper refining, copper-clad laminates, printed circuit boards, paints, jewellery and advanced aluminium products, an official said.
Majhi welcomed the proposal, saying the state's mineral wealth must translate into higher value addition and quality employment. "We intend not only to lead the country in alumina and aluminium production but also to build a globally competitive ecosystem across the entire value chain," he said. The chief minister pledged continued support for land, infrastructure, utilities and statutory approvals.
The announcement comes days after the state signed an MoU with Adani Enterprises and Abu Dhabi's International Resources Holding for an integrated greenfield aluminium project worth about ₹1.08 lakh crore.
