Adani Green director says renewables need battery storage and pumped hydro to reach full potential. The comment signals capex direction for India's clean energy sector.
Sagar Adani, director of Adani Green Energy, used his platform at London Climate Action Week to argue that India's renewable push depends on storage. "Renewable energy reaches its full potential when paired with storage technologies such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs)," he said at the inaugural Adani Green Energy Dialogue at the Science Museum.
India targets 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, up from about 180 GW today. Without storage, the grid cannot absorb intermittent solar and wind output. Adani Green is already building a 500 MW battery storage facility in Rajasthan. Tata Power and ReNew Power have also announced storage-linked projects.
The read-through for the sector is that developers with capital and land for storage are better positioned for the next wave of round-the-clock renewable contracts.
