8th Pay Commission Not Required to Brief Centre, Ministry Says
8th Pay Commission operates independently under its terms of reference, no obligation to update government on progress, minister told Rajya Sabha.

The Finance Ministry has clarified that the 8th Pay Commission is not required to keep the central government informed of its progress during its deliberations. The clarification came in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on 28 July from Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.
The commission was constituted on 3 November 2025 with Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai as chairperson, Prof Pulak Ghosh and Pankaj Jain as members. It has 18 months from the date of constitution to submit its final report on salary and pension revisions, along with allowances and other benefits for central government employees and pensioners.
"The commission's terms of reference do not provide that the commission would keep the government updated on the progress made by it, the nature of recommendations being contemplated or on its consultation process during the course of its deliberations," Chaudhary said in the written reply. He added that the government's resolution from 3 November 2025 allows the commission to devise its own procedure.
