32 tomato plants, 15 cucumber starts, 5 zucchini, and a fence-line gamble. The garden is in full swing. Here is what is working and what comes next.
The HH fired up Manny the tiller and carved out a strip in front of the fence. The plan is peony tubers this fall. The space sat empty. So the author planted 15 cucumber starts along the back fence, 5 zucchini plants toward the front, and a bunch of pole beans along another section. Gourds and mini pumpkins are next. The HH thought it was a crazy idea. The author's logic: use the space, grow vegetables, maybe sell enough cucumbers and zucchini to pay for the peony tubers.
In the backyard, the Vego raised beds are doing well. All 32 tomato plants look good. Three beds hold assorted tomatoes, carrots, beets, green beans, turnips, and basil. Another bed has three rows of leeks, two rows of green beans, radishes, and a few peppers. The elevated bed has radish, cabbage, and chives. The author thinned the carrots yesterday. The plan is to pick green beans all summer.
The cabbage bed uses about 80% Pro Mix. The author loves Pro Mix and recommends it for container gardening. The rhubarb started from seed is doing well. Same for the Shasta daisy seedlings. Mini pumpkins from old seed packets are sprouting.
The author wants at least two more raised beds, ideally four. The argument: you can never have enough garden boxes. The HH is presumably reading this. The author hopes to set up a little stand toward the end of summer.
What's growing in your garden? Anyone harvesting tomatoes yet?
