FactSet said 10 of 11 S&P 500 sectors are reporting year-on-year earnings growth, with eight posting double-digit gains. Reuters noted this month that strong corporate earnings have been supported in part by investments tied to artificial intelligence.
The Financials sector stands out for its performance, with several major banks and insurers reporting substantial positive EPS surprises. Energy, Communication Services, Consumer Discretionary, Information Technology and Materials are also posting solid growth. Pockets of weakness remain, particularly in Consumer Discretionary, where Household Durables and Automobile Components are declining.
On Aug. 10 alone, more than 350 companies posted earnings and 26 delivered notable surprises. Here are the standouts from that batch.

The breadth of beats across industrials, healthcare, energy services and consumer names suggests the earnings season's strength is not confined to AI-related tech. The Financials sector's performance, in particular, points to a credit environment that is holding up better than some bears had priced in.
For the broader market, the question is whether this earnings momentum can hold through the rest of the reporting season. With the AI investment cycle still driving capital expenditure at the largest technology companies, the risk is that a slowdown in that spending would hit the sectors that have carried the S&P 500's gains this year.
