Reading code E on a Form 4

A short derivative position is an obligation, for example a call option the insider sold that lets the buyer purchase shares from the insider. If the option expires unexercised, the obligation ends, and the filer reports the expiration with code E in Table II.

E rows are rare, and in AlphaScala’s sample they come from a handful of filers; the statistics on this page give the count. Each one ends an obligation rather than moving shares.

Its long-side counterpart is code H, the "expiration (or cancellation) of long derivative position with value received".
