How it works

Each row anchors a regional session to its IANA timezone (Australia/Sydney, Asia/Tokyo, Europe/London, America/New_York). The clock reads each city's local hour and minute live, so daylight saving transitions in either hemisphere are reflected automatically – there is no UTC offset to maintain manually.

A session is shown as Open when the local hour falls inside that session's declared trading window, and the local weekday is Monday through Friday. The countdown next to each row tells you the exact minutes remaining until the session's next state change.

The page refreshes every 30 seconds in the browser, so the status stays current without a full reload.

Worked example

If you are in London at 14:30 local time on a Tuesday, both London and New York are open (London opened at 08:00, New York opened at 08:00 New York time = 13:00 UTC). The overlap window is the highest-volume part of the day.

If you are in Tokyo at 06:00 local time, only Sydney is still open (closes at 18:00 Sydney time). Tokyo is 3 hours from open, London 2 hours from open. Liquidity will pick up sharply when London comes online.

FAQ

When does the forex market open and close?

The interbank forex market is open continuously from Sunday 22:00 UTC (Sydney Monday morning open) until Friday 22:00 UTC (New York close). It is closed across the weekend. Within the week, four regional sessions overlap to give effectively 24-hour trading on most pairs.

Why does session timing matter?

Liquidity and volatility cluster around session opens and overlaps. The London open and the London / New York overlap (typically 13:00–17:00 UTC) are the highest-volume windows of the day. Spreads tighten and trends are more likely to develop. Off-hours trading on the other hand can be choppy and prone to whipsaws.

What are the four major forex sessions?

Sydney (typically 09:00–18:00 Australia/Sydney), Tokyo (09:00–18:00 Asia/Tokyo), London (08:00–17:00 Europe/London), and New York (08:00–17:00 America/New_York). The clock above translates each into your local time and shows the live open/closed status – DST is handled automatically.

What is a session overlap and which is the best?

An overlap is a window when two regional sessions are active at the same time. London / New York is the biggest, most-traded overlap because it joins the two largest forex centres. Tokyo / London overlap (around 08:00–09:00 UTC) is the next most active.

Does the calendar reflect daylight saving changes?

Yes. Each session is anchored to its IANA timezone (Europe/London, America/New_York, etc.) so DST transitions in either hemisphere shift the UTC open and close automatically.
