August bank closures hit five days in some states as RBI holiday calendar drives staggered shutdowns. Find out which days your local branch stays shut.
The Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar for August will keep physical bank branches closed for five days this month across most states. Banks already close on all Sundays and on every second and fourth Saturday. In August, that means closures on 16 August, 22 August, and 23 August, plus regional holidays on 25 August, 26 August, and 28 August in several states.
On 25 August, banks in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh will shut for Milad-Un-Nabi and the first Onam celebration. The following day, 26 August, branches across multiple states including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand will close for Id-E-Milad, Baravafat and Thiruvonam. On 28 August, Raksha Bandhan will shutter branches in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Himachal Pradesh.
Branches operate from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on working days. On closure days, in-branch services like cash deposits, check clearing, and loan applications are unavailable. Digital channels including internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, and ATMs function normally during holidays, the RBI calendar states.
The staggered closures mean some states face up to five days without physical branch access in a single month. Kerala and Andhra Pradesh see the most breaks, with three regional holidays layered over standard weekend closures.
This is the second cycle in August. The first week had no regional holidays, with closures limited to Sundays and the second Saturday on 8 August. The RBI publishes its holiday list annually, with the calendar factoring in religious and regional festivals across states. The next cluster of holidays comes in September with Ganesh Chaturthi and Mahalaya Amavasya.
For customers who rely on cash deposits, check deposits, or in-person services, the string of closures means planning visits around the limited working days. The RBI calendar is available on its website, with city-wise lists showing which holidays apply locally.
Fareha Naaz, a Delhi-based journalist covering the RBI calendar for LiveMint, noted that the closure schedule follows the central bank's holiday rules. “Physical bank branches will operate on normal business days for mainly 4 to 5 days this week,” she wrote.
The August calendar hits a peak of closures late in the month, with three of the final eight days seeing regional holidays on top of the standard weekend. That leaves only 22 August, 24 August, 27 August and 29 August as full working days for branches in states observing all three festivals.
