USDJPY nears 160 as the dollar strengthens despite cooling U.S. inflation. BOJ rate-hike pressure builds after Japan PPI holds near a three-year high.
The dollar is pushing USDJPY toward 160 despite slower U.S. inflation, and the pair's next move depends on whether the Bank of Japan shifts its stance.
July U.S. consumer prices slowed to 3.4% from 3.5%, with the core rate falling from 2.6% to 2.5% year-over-year. Treasury yields fell and equities rose. None of it weakened the greenback. The dollar strengthened instead.
Geopolitics is the sticking point. June's inflation slowdown was tied to a U.S.-Iran agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which pulled Brent crude back to pre-conflict levels. That deal has since frayed. Brent crude has rallied above $90 a barrel. Gas prices are rising alongside it, and traders are repricing inflation risk higher even as the headline numbers cool.
The dollar's strength pushed USDJPY toward 160, reviving talk of BOJ intervention. Speculators have been leaning into the contradiction between the U.S. Treasury's push for faster BOJ tightening and the Japanese government's reluctance to raise rates, given its debt-servicing costs. The rumors got loud enough that the cabinet had to respond.
Bloomberg reported that Sanae Takaichi, a key cabinet figure, has no objection to short-term monetary tightening. Prime Minister Kishida is worried about inflation eroding his approval ratings and about the perception that intervention funds have gone to waste, the report said.
The market's read is clear: current USDJPY levels are sustainable only if the BOJ accelerates its tightening cycle or raises the expected scale of it. The rationale comes from domestic inflation. July producer prices rose 7.2%, barely below June's 7.3%, which was the highest reading in more than three years. That kind of pipeline pressure does not vanish without a policy response.
The next BOJ meeting is the first concrete date on the calendar. Speculators are betting Takaichi's reported openness gives the central bank room to act.
