Swift ran the first live interbank transaction on its new blockchain-based 24/7 ledger this week. HSBC and Standard Chartered issued, transferred, and settled tokenized deposit obligations in real time inside the pilot environment, the messaging network said.
The test moves Swift beyond the traditional batch-processing model that settles cross-border payments only during business hours. Tokenized deposits on a shared ledger let banks reconcile commitments around the clock. That closes a gap that stablecoins have exploited: crypto rails never stop.
Stablecoin supply has grown past $200 billion, with Tether and USDC alone accounting for roughly 85% of that. Settlement occurs in seconds on blockchains like Ethereum, Solana, and Tron. Correspondent banking, by contrast, still relies on sequential clearing, daylight overdrafts, and end-of-day netting. The gap in speed and availability has pushed central banks and commercial lenders to explore faster alternatives.
Swift's approach is not a permissionless blockchain. The ledger is restricted to participating financial institutions and governed by existing Swift rules. That preserves the compliance framework banks already operate under – anti-money laundering checks, sanctions screening, capital requirements – while adding real-time finality. The pilot includes 17 banks across multiple regions, Swift said.
The transaction confirmed the technical feasibility of tokenized deposits for cross-border value movement. The next phase will focus on scaling the system to handle higher volumes and integrating with existing Swift messaging, the network said. No timeline for commercial rollout has been set.
For banks, the appeal is staying relevant without adopting public blockchains. Tokenized deposits are liabilities of the issuing bank, not a separate digital asset. They carry the same legal status as conventional deposits but can be programmed and moved instantly. That opens the door to atomic swaps – where payment and delivery happen simultaneously – and reduces settlement risk.
Competition from stablecoins is not the only pressure. Central bank digital currencies are also in development, and private-sector initiatives like the Regulated Liability Network aim to connect tokenized deposits, CBDCs, and stablecoins on a shared platform. Swift's test positions it as a coordination layer rather than a competing rail.
Mastercard has taken a similar route, testing shared identity signals for stablecoin payments with Borderless.xyz. The two networks are pursuing different strategies – Swift through bank-owned ledger, Mastercard through credential sharing – but both reflect the same reality: banks need a 24/7 alternative to survive the stablecoin era.
