Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Mahabalipuram, near Chennai, on Thursday.
The council provides a forum for resolving issues between the Centre and member states and union territories, a government statement said. It also looks at advancing cooperation between the parties.
Member states include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. The union territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep are also part of the council.
Shah is the Chairman. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay serves as Vice-Chairman, a role that rotates among the chief ministers of member states.
The meeting will include the Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors or Administrators of the member states and union territories, along with two senior ministers from each state. Chief Secretaries, advisors and other senior state and central government officers will attend as well.
The council has set up a standing committee at the chief secretary level. Issues proposed by states go to that committee first, and remaining items are placed before the full council, the statement said.
These councils typically discuss issues of national importance, including fast-track special courts for sexual offence cases and education policy. Regional topics on the agenda include matters under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, water-sharing project issues, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) and civil aviation concerns.
