Upbit's 24-hour trading volume surged 273% to $1.84 billion, the highest single-day reading since mid-March. Bithumb, the country's second-largest exchange, saw a 132.9% jump to $934.9 million. Together, the two platforms handled nearly $2.8 billion in won-denominated volume over the same window.
The spike came as Bitcoin hit a three-month high near $79,500, up 26% in a week. Ripple's XRP led Upbit activity at $418.9 million in 24-hour turnover, ahead of Bitcoin, Tether, and Ethereum. Korean traders also moved into high-momentum altcoins and newly listed tokens, a shift toward riskier assets that had been absent for months.
The return follows a period when local investors had rotated into the KOSPI, where names like Samsung and SK Hynix were drawing capital. The KOSPI has since pulled back from its highs, while crypto rallied. A wave of forced liquidations across global markets – over $1.7 billion in leveraged positions – may have created entry points.
The buying has revived the Kimchi Premium. Some assets traded 1.8% to 2.4% higher on Upbit and Bithumb than on global exchanges such as Coinbase and Binance. On Bithumb, Layer-1 networks and AI-linked tokens saw outsized demand.
The two exchanges cleared almost $3 billion in KRW trading volume over 24 hours, a pace not seen in weeks.
