SBI Holdings acquired a majority stake in Coinhako, a MAS-licensed crypto exchange, to bolster its Singapore hub, accelerate stablecoin and cross-border trading.
Japanese financial group SBI Holdings has taken a majority stake in Coinhako, a Monetary Authority of Singapore-licensed crypto exchange. The deal closed July 16 after SBI received approval from the MAS.
SBI completed the acquisition through a capital injection and a share purchase from Coinhako's existing shareholders. The exchange now operates as a consolidated subsidiary of SBI. The transaction value was not disclosed.
SBI Ventures Asset, the group's Singapore-based arm, holds the stake through Coinhako parent company Holdbuild. Coinhako's licensed subsidiary, Hako Technology, holds a Major Payment Institution license from the MAS. A separate entity, Alpha Hako, is registered as a crypto asset service provider with the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission.
SBI Holdings has identified Singapore as a core hub for digital asset expansion across Asia-Pacific. The group is also developing blockchain-based financial infrastructure with partner Startale. The collaboration includes JPYSC, marketed as Japan's first trust-type yen-denominated stablecoin.
SBI Holdings Chairman and President Yoshitaka Kitao said the group aims to create a global corridor for digital assets. "Our group aims to create a global corridor for digital assets by connecting exchanges worldwide, enabling investors worldwide to make optimal investments without being hindered by borders or currency barriers," he said.
He added that Singapore's advanced regulatory approach to digital assets made the market a priority for the group. Kitao also said the two companies would move quickly to deliver combined services tied to JPYSC. He said SBI Holdings would mark the 60th anniversary of Japan-Singapore diplomatic relations with an overseas branch manager meeting in Singapore this summer.
Coinhako has operated in Singapore for close to ten years under co-founders Yusho Liu and Gerry Eng. Both executives will continue to lead the exchange following the change in ownership.
Coinhako CEO Yusho Liu said joining the SBI Group is a natural step for the next stage of growth. He said the company had spent the past decade building what he called the most trusted, law-compliant crypto asset platform in Southeast Asia under a leading regulatory environment.
Liu also said the strong support of the SBI Group, combined with their solid business foundation and broad network, would enable them to deliver next-generation digital financial services to customers across Southeast Asia at a higher level.
SBI Holdings said it will explore additional opportunities in tokenization and cross-border trading following the deal. Coinhako's regional network and regulatory standing will pair with SBI's broader financial and technology infrastructure.
Liu closed by saying, "Our challenge has only just begun."
