SBI Holdings acquires majority stake in Singapore's Coinhako, expanding Asia crypto footprint. Deal includes yen stablecoin, tokenization, and cross-border trading plans. ONDO jumps 15%.
SBI Holdings has taken a majority stake in Singapore crypto exchange Coinhako, a deal that gives the Japanese financial group a regulated base in Southeast Asia's largest digital asset market.
The transaction closed July 16. SBI Ventures, its Singapore subsidiary, bought shares from existing investors and injected fresh capital. The Monetary Authority of Singapore approved the deal, SBI said in an official statement. Coinhako will now operate as a consolidated subsidiary.
The acquisition adds Coinhako's customer base and regional experience to SBI's growing crypto portfolio. The group already runs a Japanese exchange and has been building a network that connects Asia digital asset markets. Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao said the goal is a global digital asset corridor where investors can move without currency or border limits.
"We are very pleased that Coinhako, with its solid customer base and business know-how, has joined the SBI Group," Kitao said. "By quickly realizing various synergies between the two companies, we will provide next-generation financial services as soon as possible."
Coinhako co-founder and CEO Yusho Liu described the deal as a natural next step. SBI's financial resources and network would support Coinhako's expansion across Southeast Asia, he said.
SBI plans to explore tokenization and on-chain finance through Coinhako, including a yen stablecoin project. The stablecoin, JPYSC, is being developed by SBI and blockchain infrastructure company Startale. The exchange also gives SBI access to Singapore's regulated digital asset market, where it can offer cross-border trading services.
The Coinhako deal follows SBI's $289 million acquisition of Japanese exchange Bitbank in June. SBI also recently partnered with the Solana Foundation to support an on-chain financial market in Japan and with Ondo Finance to tokenize Japanese equities.
ONDO, the token tied to Ondo Finance, rose 15% to $0.393 after the partnership announcement, pushing its weekly gain past 20%.
