Rivian beat Q1 delivery guidance but lost $655 million. The R2 launch and VW's $5.8 billion investment backstop the path to 2027 EBITDA targets.

Rivian Automotive burned through $655 million in operating losses in the first quarter, even as it beat its own delivery guidance and raised its full-year forecast. The EV maker delivered 12,194 vehicles in the quarter, above the high end of its 11,000-unit estimate, and management now expects 67,500 deliveries for 2025, up from 64,500 at the midpoint.
The better numbers come from the rollout of the R2, a lower-cost SUV starting at $45,000. Rivian is betting the R2 gets it to mass-market scale. The company is also building a multibillion-dollar factory in Georgia, targeting an opening in 2028 with capacity for hundreds of thousands of vehicles a year.
On the financing side, the joint venture with Volkswagen, announced in November 2024, includes $5.8 billion in staged investments. The German automaker plans to use Rivian's in-house zonal architecture in its own vehicles as soon as next year. The R2 is the first Rivian model built on an optimized version of that architecture.
That technology stack, developed in-house, is Rivian's most valuable asset, analysts said. It gives the company control over the entire EV ecosystem – software, hardware, and manufacturing – but the vertical-integration strategy also explains the cash burn. Rivian's accumulated deficit since its 2009 founding topped $27 billion at the end of the first quarter.
To keep funding the Georgia plant and R2 production, Rivian sold 75 million shares this month, raising $1.2 billion. The stock has fallen more than 90% from its 2021 IPO peak above $170, and it trades below $20.
Management pushed back its target for positive adjusted EBITDA to 2027, a delay that puts more pressure on the R2 ramp and the VW cash tranches. The next catalyst is the Georgia factory's construction timeline and whether Rivian can hold delivery momentum through the second half of 2025.
