Nvidia reports quarterly results Wednesday, with options pricing a roughly 6% swing in the stock. The event is the biggest on Wall Street this week, carrying implications for the entire semiconductor and AI complex.
Seeking Alpha analyst Mott Capital warned of a post-Nvidia earnings hangover if the numbers are strong but not spectacular. A decline could be sharp, pushing the stock to an area of technical and options-related support at $190, they said. Upside looks limited, they added.
The results tend to reverberate across names with the closest trading correlations: Marvell Technology, Micron, Arm and Advanced Micro Devices. The rest of the earnings calendar includes PDD Holdings and XPeng Monday, CrowdStrike, Salesforce, HP and Okta Wednesday, and Marvell and Ulta Beauty Thursday.
A strong beat with raised guidance could reassure investors. A softer print or cautious outlook on China exposure would likely trigger the downside, Mott Capital said.
Friday brings Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's keynote at the Jackson Hole Symposium at 10 a.m. ET. At his last press conference, Warsh said higher Treasury yields were doing the Fed's work. Since then, yields have risen further, prompting Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to boost buybacks of longer-dated debt. Seeking Alpha analyst Geneva Investor said the two men want opposite things in the long end. Bessent wants the 10-year and 30-year lower, while Warsh wants a smaller Fed footprint, which raises the long end mechanically. Damir Tokic said Warsh will face pressure to address the bond market selloff and will likely restate that real rates are rising while inflation expectations remain anchored, a dovish message that could steepen the curve.
Canada said Sunday it will impose retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of U.S. imports starting Sept. 8, responding to new U.S. 50% tariffs on Canadian goods. Trade talks collapsed Friday. President Trump posted on Truth Social that Canada has charged U.S. farmers massive tariffs and wants benefits without being a state.
For income investors, 3M goes ex-dividend Monday, paying Sept. 11. Hyatt goes ex-dividend Thursday, T-Mobile and eBay on Friday.
