The Nifty 50 slipped below 24,200 on Monday, reversing early gains after weakness in heavyweight banking stocks weighed on the index. The benchmark fell 67.65 points, or 0.28%, to 24,184.35 by 12:50 p.m. local time. The Sensex declined 246.25 points, or 0.32%, to 77,294.58.
Both indices opened higher, with the Nifty touching an intraday high of 24,308.20 and the Sensex reaching 77,764.98. Selling pressure then pushed them into negative territory.
Sudeep Shah, head of technical and derivatives research at SBI Securities, said the frontline indices came under selling pressure after a flat start, particularly due to weakness in heavyweight banking counters. The broader market showed relative strength, he noted, with the Nifty Smallcap Index hitting a fresh lifetime high intraday.
Metal and information technology stocks outperformed. Hindalco Industries led the Nifty gainers, rising 1.94% to ₹1,054.05. JSW Steel gained 1.45% and Tata Steel rose 1.28%. Dr Reddy's Laboratories added 1.26%. Infosys advanced 1.29% to ₹1,135.50. The stock carries an AlphaScala Alpha Score of 57, indicating moderate momentum.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone fell 1.46% to ₹1,675.10. State Bank of India declined 1.40% and Bharat Electronics lost 1.40%. Power Grid Corporation dropped 1.30% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles slipped 1.18% to ₹314.15.
Market breadth remained positive. On the BSE, 2,330 stocks advanced against 1,565 declines, with 281 unchanged. About 152 stocks touched 52-week highs, while 57 hit lows. A total of 189 stocks locked in the upper circuit and 166 in the lower circuit.
Shah identified 24,160-24,140 as a crucial support zone for the Nifty, with resistance at 24,280-24,300. A break below 24,140 could push the index toward 24,020-24,000, he said. A move above 24,300 could extend the rally to 24,440.
