With equity call options requiring delivery margins that climb to 100% by expiry day, Nifty index options' cash settlement lets traders avoid that capital drain and hold positions deeper in the money.
When Nifty options approach expiry, the cash-settlement mechanism gives traders a structural edge over equity options.
Equity call options that expire in the money require physical delivery of shares. To reduce the risk of default, brokers collect delivery margins from the long holder. Margins start four days before expiry, rising from 10% of the delivery value to 100% on expiry day itself. That ramp-up can tie up significant capital on a deep ITM position, forcing traders to close early and miss the final move.
Nifty index options face no such burden. Because the settlement is cash-based, there is no delivery of the 50 constituent stocks. No delivery margin is collected. A trader can hold a long call all the way through expiry, even if it goes deep ITM by three or more strikes. The capital that would have been locked in a margin account stays available for other positions or for scaling the existing one.
There is a second benefit. Deep ITM equity options tend to lose liquidity as they move further from the strike. A holder who wants to close may struggle to get a fair price. Nifty options, by contrast, maintain tighter spreads through the curve because the cash-settled structure keeps market makers willing to quote. The liquidity risk that plagues deep ITM equity calls is largely absent in the index variant.
The same advantages apply to spread strategies. Bull spreads, bear spreads, and ratio spreads all benefit from cash settlement. The margin calculation for those structures is also simpler when no delivery is pending.
Traders who are comfortable with index options can later move to equity options once they understand the delivery and liquidity mechanics. The index market offers a training ground with lower capital friction.
The next expiry cycle will test whether traders have shifted more volume into Nifty options to avoid the equity margin drag.
