Nexon Geochem plans a 1,200 mtpa NdFeB magnet facility in Hyderabad via a pact with Russia's Giredmet, targeting India's ₹5,625 crore domestic market growing at 30% CAGR.
Hyderabad-based Nexon Geochem has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia's State Research and Design Institute of Rare Metal Industry (Giredmet) to jointly develop rare-earth magnet production technology. The company plans to build a sintered NdFeB permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Hyderabad, aiming for 1,200 million tonnes per annum capacity by FY33.
NdFeB magnets are critical components in wind turbine generators and electric vehicle traction motors. India's domestic consumption of permanent magnets stands at 7,500 mtpa in 2026, growing at a 30% CAGR, with a market size of ₹5,625 crore at an average price of ₹7,500 per kg, according to Nexon Geochem's estimates. By 2031, consumption is expected to reach 12,500 mtpa, pushing the market to ₹20,625 crore.
Praveen Choudhary, Founder of Nexon Geochem, said the collaboration brings "world-class technology transfer" from an institution with nearly a century of rare metal expertise. "The real work begins now," he said.
Giredmet, an entity of Russia's Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, brings deep-processing technologies for rare and rare-earth metal raw materials. Konstantin Ivanovskikh, Deputy Director for Science and Innovation at Giredmet, said the agreements represent a move toward "practical implementation of rare earth magnet production projects" and a contribution to the technological sovereignty of India and Russia.
The MoU covers joint R&D spanning high-purity rare earth metals, compounds, and finished materials for use in electronics, chemical, and nuclear industries. It includes development of analytical control methodologies, scaling of technologies from laboratory to pilot production, and joint academic programmes.
Currently, the supply chain for high-performance magnets remains heavily concentrated globally, leaving countries like India dependent on imports despite rapidly growing demand. Nexon Geochem aims to address this gap by building an end-to-end domestic manufacturing platform, reducing import dependence and positioning itself as one of the first integrated rare earth oxide-to-magnet platforms in the country.
