MoonPay on Tuesday launched PayBox, a payment plugin that lets users of ChatGPT and Claude buy and swap cryptocurrencies, book travel reservations, and pay for e-commerce purchases directly inside the AI chatbot conversation.
The system works as a custom plugin in both platforms. After installing it, users link a wallet or payment card, set up passkey authentication, and configure spending limits. MoonPay requires identity verification when funds come through a connected card.
Users give natural-language instructions inside the chat window. The AI assistant checks available options, builds the appropriate payment or blockchain transaction, then asks for approval. By default, every action needs a passkey. Users can switch to an autonomous mode that allows transactions within preset thresholds set by the account owner.
MoonPay said PayBox keeps sensitive data away from the AI. The chatbot never sees full card numbers or wallet private keys. Multi-party computation and trusted execution environments split wallet-key management so no single component can move funds on its own. Card transactions use Visa's agent commerce framework, which masks the actual card number. Each passkey authorization works for exactly one transaction and expires immediately after.
"The Always Ask setting requires explicit human approval for every payment or transfer. Autonomous mode lets users define boundaries and spending caps," the company said in the announcement.
PayBox launches on Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible chains, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo, and Robinhood Chain. MoonPay plans to add more networks later.
The service also integrates with x402, an open protocol for machine-to-machine payments originally built by Coinbase and now under Linux Foundation governance. That connection enables restaurant bookings, retail purchases, and airline-ticket reservations through participating vendors.
MoonPay built PayBox on technology it acquired from Sodot earlier this year. Sodot's infrastructure currently protects more than $50 billion in assets across over 10 million wallets, MoonPay said. The integration taps MoonPay's existing network of more than 1,700 corporate partners.
The launch follows a broader push by crypto firms to embed their services into AI platforms. MoonPay's approach ties payment authorization to biometric or device-level verification, aiming to solve the problem of giving an AI agent access to a wallet without losing control of it.
