Meta launched Pocket on Thursday, a stand-alone social app that turns text prompts into interactive posts – mini-games, quirky memes, anything a user can describe. The rollout follows a quiet test in July and marks the latest in Meta's push to build new apps outside its core Facebook and Instagram properties.
"We're starting to roll out Pocket, a new app that turns your ideas into interactive creations you can play with and share right from your phone," a Meta spokesperson told Business Insider.
The app was built by the team behind Gizmo, a similar product from Atma Sciences Inc., which was founded by former Snapchat staffers. Meta hired the Atma Sciences team and acquired a non-exclusive license to its technology in a deal Business Insider reported in March. Atma Sciences announced Thursday it is shutting down the original Gizmo app.
Pocket and Gizmo are nearly identical. Users open a vertical feed of posts called "gizmos" – interactive cards they can drag, draw, or tap on. Comments, likes, and reposts are supported, but there is no direct messaging. Users can share links to gizmos outside the app.
To create a gizmo, a user types a prompt. The app generates an interactive post within seconds, powered by Meta's Muse Spark model, developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. If the output is off, users can refine the prompt, adjust visuals, and add music. They can also remix another user's gizmo with their own twist.
The company does not plan to integrate Pocket with Instagram or other Meta apps at this stage, the spokesperson said. That keeps Pocket as a stand-alone experiment, similar to Threads, which Meta launched in 2023 as an X competitor. Threads has since grown to over 150 million monthly active users and is now being monetized with ads.
Other startups are chasing the same territory. Sekai and Wabi are building social apps around vibe-coding, and investors have taken notice. Creators are already turning interactive mini-apps into viral content on existing platforms.
Pocket does not show ads yet, but the advertising opportunity is clear. Sponsored gizmos from brands or creators could slot into the feed the way sponsored posts appear on Instagram and Facebook. Every new Meta app becomes a new ad surface eventually.
Meta has launched several other stand-alone apps recently, including Edits (a video editing tool), a WhatsApp Business companion app, and a dedicated shopping app. The strategy mirrors the company's playbook from the early 2010s, when it spun off Messenger and then Instagram as separate apps.
Pocket is available on iOS starting Thursday. An Android version has not been announced.
