Meta Platforms will build its first Canadian data centre north of Edmonton, a $13 billion project the company says will be the largest in the country. The one-gigawatt facility in Sturgeon County was first announced last year by Pembina Pipeline Corporation, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management. At the time, the partners said they would build and power the centre for an unnamed client. Meta confirmed Wednesday it is that client and will invest the full $13 billion.
The company said the centre will create 3,000 construction jobs and support 300 permanent roles once operational. Meta is also spending $60 million on local infrastructure upgrades, including road and water system improvements. The facility will use a closed-loop cooling system, which Meta said will minimize water consumption.
Meta said it will cover the full cost of the data centre's energy use, fund new grid and generation infrastructure, and match its consumption with renewable energy. That structure – developer builds, tenant pays for power – is becoming standard for hyperscale AI data centres, where electricity is the largest operating cost after hardware.
For Pembina Pipeline, the project ties a new revenue stream to the AI buildout. The company's Pembina Pipeline: Fee-Based Cash Flows and a 2026 Growth Pipeline shows how fee-based infrastructure contracts can smooth earnings. Morgan Stanley's infrastructure arm is the equity partner on the development side.
Meta's Alpha Score sits at 64/100, labelled Moderate, with the stock down 2.02% on the session at $603.14. The data centre investment does not change near-term earnings. It signals that Meta is willing to commit capital to physical infrastructure at a scale that rivals its US buildout. The Edmonton region has become a hub for large-scale data centre construction, driven by available land, cool climate and grid capacity that is being expanded.
This is an evolving story. More details are expected as permitting and construction timelines are finalised.
