Mastercard tests a single-audit compliance model for stablecoin payments with Borderless.xyz, applying correspondent banking logic to digital asset networks. Borderless.xyz CEO Kevin Lehtiniitty says the pilot solves the scaling problem of re-verifying counterparties at every step.

Mastercard is testing whether its Crypto Credential framework can standardize compliance checks across stablecoin payment networks, the company said Wednesday.
The pilot with Borderless.xyz, a stablecoin infrastructure firm, applies a single-audit model to cross-border payments. Instead of each counterparty re-verifying a transaction's compliance status, one audit clears the payment for every participant downstream.
"One of the biggest friction points for stablecoin payment operators isn't the payments," Borderless.xyz CEO Kevin Lehtiniitty said in the release. "It's that compliance doesn't scale the same way the network does. Every new provider means starting the verification process over. Correspondent banking solved this decades ago: originating compliance trusted downstream, no re-execution at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments."
The project pulls in multiple Borderless.xyz network participants, many of which came through Mastercard's Start Path startup program. They will be among the first stablecoin payment operators to run on the single-audit model at network scale, the release said.
Mastercard Crypto Credential launched last year as a set of standards for verifying counterparties in blockchain-based transactions. The framework issues what the company calls "assurance signals" that participants can plug into approval, compliance and risk workflows.
"Stablecoins are increasingly being used to move value across borders, creating new opportunities for faster and more efficient payments," the release said. "As adoption grows, participants need trusted ways to understand who they are interacting with and whether counterparties have met appropriate standards and requirements."
The deeper opportunity goes beyond faster settlement, a PYMNTS Intelligence report published Monday found. Stablecoins are converting corporate liquidity from a static balance-sheet asset into programmable working capital, the report said. Treasury policies could become executable rules rather than periodic instructions.
Mastercard's MA stock page carries an Alpha Score of 71 out of 100, rated Moderate, in the Financials sector.
The Borderless.xyz pilot follows a broader push by Mastercard into crypto infrastructure. The company has filed patents for blockchain-based payment systems and joined the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. A production rollout of the single-audit model would depend on the pilot results, the release said.
