Mangaluru's railway region will be brought under a single administrative zone from October 1, 2026, ending a split that had left parts of the city under two different railway divisions.
The area currently divided between South Western Railway's Mysuru division and Southern Railway's Palakkad division will fall entirely under SWR's Mysuru division, according to a Railway Board letter posted by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta on X.
Chowta called the decision "a great sense of contentment" and said the demand had been raised "within days of taking oath as your MP in June 2024." He credited Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for pushing the change through.
The Railway Board letter spells out the boundary shift. Mangaluru area up to Ullal (inclusive) transfers from Palakkad division of SR to Mysuru division of SWR. The interchange point between the two zones moves from Padil to Ullal. Thokur station stays with Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd and will serve as the interchange between KRCL and SWR.
Divisional and zonal boundaries between KRCL and SR will become the boundaries between KRCL and SWR after the change. The exact lines between SR and SWR will be specified in a Gazette Notification, the letter said.
Chowta said the unification reduces jurisdictional hurdles, improves coordination, and should speed up resolution of passenger complaints. "With the formal notification expected soon, we will be better placed to address many of our railway-related concerns," he said.
The Railway Board letter instructs zone officials to begin preparatory actions – transfer of posts, calling of options, transfer of control boards – in time for the October 1, 2026 effective date.
