Italy's trade surplus widened to €4.23 billion in June, up from the prior month, as exports rose faster than imports, the statistics office reported.
Seasonally adjusted exports climbed 1.6% from May, while imports increased 1.2%. The export gain was concentrated in the EU market, where shipments jumped 6.7%. Trade with non-EU countries fell 3.6%.
On the import side, flows from both EU and non-EU markets rose, up 1.1% and 1.4% respectively.
Over the second quarter, exports increased 2.2% from the first three months of the year. Imports grew more sharply, up 5.4%.
Year over year, the acceleration was more pronounced. June exports were 9.8% higher than in June 2025. Imports rose 13.2%. EU-bound exports surged 15.1% annually, while shipments to non-EU countries increased 4.1%.
Import patterns showed the opposite geographic tilt. Inflows from non-EU countries soared 18.7% year on year, compared with a 9.1% rise from EU countries.
Despite imports growing faster than exports on an annual basis, the trade surplus remained sizable at €4.23 billion. That included a €1.58 billion surplus with EU countries and a €2.66 billion surplus with non-EU countries.
Excluding energy products, the surplus reached €9.23 billion, a sign of strength in Italy's underlying goods trade.
Import prices fell 1.3% month on month in June. Prices for goods from the euro area were flat, while those from outside the euro area declined 2.6%. The quarterly picture was different. Over the three months to June, import prices rose 5.0% from the prior three months, driven by a 7.4% increase from outside the euro area and a 2.5% gain inside the euro area.
Annual import prices were 4.9% higher than in June 2025. Prices for euro-area imports rose 3.0%, while those from outside the euro area increased 6.6%.
The data comes as traders track the EUR/USD profile for clues on the euro's next move, with the European Central Bank's policy meeting on the horizon.
