India targets $100 bn in gems, jewellery exports by 2040, Commerce Secy says

He called for investing in human capital, skill upgrades, and using technologies like artificial intelligence and 3D printing to differentiate products. India's cultural history should be woven into jewellery designs to strengthen the country's soft power, he added. Transparent, technology-driven trust networks should be built across domestic and export markets to address younger consumers' preferences.

The Shivir was structured around five priority missions: Global Market Access, MSME scale-up, export-import fast-track, and skill development, according to a statement from the commerce ministry.

India's gems and jewellery sector employs roughly 5 million people, mostly in small workshops in Mumbai, Surat, and Jaipur. The country imports nearly all of its rough diamonds and precious metals, processes them, and re-exports finished goods. The U.S. and the Middle East account for about half of Indian jewellery exports, industry data show.

Agarwal did not specify policy measures to support the target. No timeline for the missions was announced.
